What Kind Of Mother Are You?

I sometimes wonder if I am a good mother. I am not always certain if I am making the right decisions for my little girl. I am still learning as I go & hoping that I do right by her along the way. Every mother has a different parenting style. We are all unique women with our own way of doing things.

There are several different kinds of mommies out there.

The New Mom

How to spot her: She has a crying infant attached to her. She is probably wearing oversized sweatpants and a spit-up stained sweatshirt. It is possible that she might have a poop stain on her cheek as well.  She looks like she hasn’t slept in days because she probably hasn’t.

The Overprotective Mom

How to spot herShe will be the one running frantically from one end of the bouncy house to the other screeching softly as children larger than hers enter. Often seen with a large roll of bubble wrap sticking out of her purse.

The Know It All Mom

How to spot her: You will find her cornering the newest mommy in the group at a birthday party offering unsolicited parenting advice. Listen for backhanded digs toward other mothers & lots of gloating about her children, as she has raised them perfectly.

The Put Together Mom

How to spot her: You will recognize her as the one us that all of us sweat pants clad mommies are sneering at. She is attractive of course. Her & her children are always flawlessly dressed. Her hair is up in a perfectly messy up do. She most likely fit back into her size 4 jeans on the way home from the hospital. She is not me.

The Super Mom

How to spot herYou will see this mommy at the grocery store with her 2 perfectly mannered children in tow, helping her shop for the gourmet dinner she is fixing the family that evening. Her home is perfectly kept with framed artwork that her and her children did together.

The “Where is this kid’s mom” Mom

How to spot herYou often can’t, but she is the mother of the kid in the playground that knocked your child over 4 times intentionally & shot another in the eye with a slingshot.  She is most likely the lady way over there talking on her cell phone or updating her Facebook status with her back turned to her child.

The Patient Mom

How to spot her: With a tantruming child clung screaming at her feet & pulling at her pant leg, this mother is able to remain poised and calm. You watch as she kneels down & whispers magical words into her child’s ears to get them to stop. This mother does not frazzle or yell. I watch her enviously, while I search for my Xanax.

The All Around Mom

How to spot her: Usually this mother has at least one boy & one girl. She can relate to most other moms because she has experienced everything being a mommy has to offer. She has raised one easy child & one not so easy one. She always has great pearls of wisdom to offer.

What kind of mother are you? Or perhaps you are a mix. I am the Overprotective Mom without a doubt.

  1. I am definitely not the new mom and so not the patient mom. Truly not sure which one of these I fall into, but think I might be a bit of a mix if that makes sense!! 🙂

Not sure where I fit in. I would make a new category calked, “the Not Feeling So Well Mom who does the best she can”. I wish I were super mom! I’m a perfectionist which makes being a sick mom a battle in my mind!! Btw, I live your blog. It’s great!!

  3. Great one I would say I am the got it together mom with a sprinkle of the I have the look mom that will stop you in your tracks if you get out of line 🙂

  4. saluciani says:

The parents who worrying about doing it well are the ones who are doing it well 🙂

  5. Lol this is awesome! There are so many I got into. I am the mom with one boy and one girl, who has learned extreme paitence via raising a child with autism, who lives in yoga pants and ballet slippers, has a house that is a daily disaster to be cleaned up nightly and is more often than not covered in some sort of food or art supply.

And there a naked child just ran past me while on Facebook browsing blogs…

    Loved the post!

  6. For myself I’d say I’m a little bit of all of them except the where’s this kids mom. I’ve encountered (or haven’t encountered) a lot of those in my years.

  7. Risa says:

Right now I feel like I am the all around mom and the new mom at the same time. Newborns will do that to you.

  8. Bonnie Frank says:

This is a fun post! I’ve been a few of these moms, actually. I wish I ever had size 4 jeans to get back into…

  9. I was number 1, then number 2, but never 3, 4 or 5. I’ve mellowed out over the years and this is about as close as I’m going to get to the All-Around Mom. Except I don’t have a lot of pearls of wisdom; they’re more like Doritos.

  10. I want to say I’m the all around mom 🙂 Great post!

  11. wickedcraftymama says:

I am DEFINITELY the overprotective mom !! Working on it ! 😉 Great post

  12. I’m definitely not the super mom! lol! Yeah, I’d probably be the protective mom too. I don’t care if you’re 3 – you push my little girl down on the playground, we’re going to have a problem! lol!

    • My daughter gets pushed around far too much when we are in play groups or the park. I used to not say anything because I don’t think it is right to correct another person’s child but after they have come and pushed her out of the way more than once without reprimand, I step in.

  13. Ashley M says:

While I think this is funny, I really think that as moms we have to stop tearing each other down and criticizing each other so much. Whether we’re new moms, helicopter moms or the all around mom we spend each day doing our absolute best in constantly changing territory.

    • I am sorry if you found this critical, Ashley. That certainly was not my intent, except maybe with the “Where is this kid’s mom?” mom. It seems that every play group or class I bring my daughter to there is always that one kid that will knock her off her bike or kick over her tower & nobody says anything. This I take offense to. Other than that I think that it is wonderful all the different styles of parenting that are out there. Like I said, I am still learning as I go & learning alot from other mommies along the way. This was just meant to be a light hearted list, which either reference me or who I wish I could be. I did just run back and forth from one end of the bouncy house to the other last week, I was the new mommy with poop on the cheek, I have even been the know it al,l even though I am not sure I know anything. I strive to be super & patient & even put together when possible.

  14. Haha, I loved this post! Spot on. I think I’m the All Around Mom. Having 2 boys and a girl, all 4 and under, it certainly sometimes feels like I have seen it all! Lol. I actually wrote a blog post similar to this one about parents you’d find in a pediatrician’s waiting room on my blog, thelosingchronicles.wordpress.com … Feel free to check it out! I’ll definitely be following your blog 😄

I am strangely and surprisingly the Patient Mom.

  16. kim says:

Great post. I would love for you to guest post this info on my mommie blog if you want!!! I’m a little of it all. I’m an older mom raising her grandchild, so I’ve been there before …but still don’t know it all!! Contact me if yo want!!! KIM – Mommie…Again

  17. I would say that I have been many of these moms at some point in time, however I am leaning more towards “The All Around Mom”. With 3 kids I have pretty much been there done that, at this point. 🙂

  18. I’m always worried, but time helped me know when to relax and when to act! By what you wrote, you are doing a wonderful job!

  19. I am not a mom. However, I deal with different moms almost everyday as I am a school teacher. I can see lots of “moms” in this post 🙂 I like the part of the Know-it-all-mom. They think they have raised their kids perfectly and often defend their kids when their kids have made wrongdoings. I am going to share this in my FB 🙂

  20. I don’t know where I would fit in… I homeschool so I’m kind of attached to the little brat – I mean angel – all day, so I need to be the Patient Mom, but by the end of the day I’m definitely like “Don’t you have somewhere to be? Like maybe playing in the street? Stop asking me questions!”

I try to be the all around mom but sometimes I m the stressed out mom of three who people probably look at with pity as yet again my toddler has dumped something out. visiting from the Wake up Wednesday Linky

  22. Sandra says:

Fun post! I am probably the all around mom, but never the put together mom or super mom! Thanks for linking up at The Four Seasons Blog Hop! Sandra from Scrumptilicious 3 You!

  23. Haha! What a great list. I can see myself in several of these, but think I most relate to the overprotective mom. I was that “new mom” last year and will be so again in a few months (definitely with sweatpants and baby spit all over!), but have definitely learned to go with the flow more.

  24. Esther says:

I see the hilarity, the pro’s and con’s, and the tendency we all have to fit into each and every one of these categories at different times. I think that is what can give us compassion for all the other “mom-types” out there, even if we don’t feel like we resemble them at the current moment. Each of us have been or will be the new mom. We may all start out as helicopter moms, but on tough frantic days we will be “where is this kids mom” moms, and on our best days we strive to be patient moms. I found your post so funny because I think if we are all being truly honest with ourselves we have been or will be a bit of each of them. Which in turn can help us extend support, grace, and understanding to other moms no matter what. 🙂

  25. fitnessmomwinecountry says:

I love this post Kim…I would fall under the Over Protective Mom category and maybe the Super Mom…we live with pretty structured and organized all the the time, but still have room for lots of fun and adventure:)
