Play-Doh Nature Craft

It was not the nicest weekend. Most of my outdoor plans were thwarted by soggy grass & too many bugs. We planned to go to the local kid gymnasium, but when we got there they never opened. Instead, we went to one of our favorite places, the library. We love the library. With all three of us being such avid readers, we would bankrupt ourselves buying new books. The library offers us an unlimited supply of great reads for each of us.

Among the children’s books I found two big books of activities & crafts to do with children of all ages. Many of the activities & crafts we geared for older children, but I did come across a few that I thought my daughter might enjoy. One of pages that I came across had an interesting idea that involved pressing items found in nature into Play-Doh. This sounded like a cute activity that my daughter might enjoy.

What you will need:

A paper plate

Assorted items found in nature, grass, rocks, clovers, leaves, flowers, sticks & acorns

Gather various items from your backyard. Collect a variety of sizes, shapes & colors; finding leaves, flowers, rocks, etc…On a paper plate, spread out your Play-Doh until you reach the first circle outline. Smooth out and pat around the sides to even out your Play-Doh and even out your circle. Show your child how take the nature items & push them into the Play-Doh & then allow them to do it. Have them arrange & press until they feel that it is complete & then let it dry.

We went outside & gathered our supplies.

Start kneading the Play-Doh from the middle & work it out towards the edges stopping at the first circle outline.

Flatten & pat around the edges to help smooth out.

Mai picked up on the craft right away. She pressed her flowers & rocks into the dough.

Mai didn’t forget to stop to smell each flower.

She realized quickly that the rocks were her favorite. Mommy had to run back outside & bring in more rocks.

Our daughter enjoyed this craft so much, she ran & got more colors of Play-Doh & asked to make more. “More rocks please, mommy.”

Here are Mai’s completed works of art.

This was a great activity and craft. We had fun gathering our nature finds & this activity really kept Mai engaged. This is one that we will do again and again.
